The Lawrence Welk Show

Between pp. 145-154 of This Boy’s Life, Jack’s family is watching The Lawrence Welk Christmas Special. If you’re curious what that’s about, here’s a link to the Wikipedia page for that show. The Lennon Sisters are specifically mentioned (p. 146); here they are:

Here are links to the other clips we watched in class.

Toby/Jack In Uniform

In the current reading, we see young Jack thrust into the Boy Scouts. On page 101, we’re told Dwight gave Jack “an outsize uniform that Skipper had once worn.” With that as our starting point, consider the following question(s):

Discuss three “uniforms” Toby/Jack has worn so far over the course of this book (interpret the word “uniform” broadly). What meanings does each one have? What does each suggest about the person wearing it? Most importantly, what is Tobias Wolff trying to convey by having this parade of uniforms as a recurring motif?

You should be thinking in the neighborhood of 3-5 paragraphs, typed, with specific evidence and page numbers where appropriate. I would like it turned in at the end of the hour.

For Monday, read up to page 144 in This Boy’s Life.
